Risk Factors for Wound Complications After Ankle Fracture Surgery
Adam G. Miller, MD, Andrew Margoules, MD, Steven Raikin, MD. Rothman Institute, Philadelphia, PA.
JBJS. 2012 Nov 21.

The authors reviewed a series of 478 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation after ankle fracture by a single surgeon. Significant associations with wound complications were found with a history of diabetes, peripheral neuropathy, medications that compromise wounds, open fractures and patient noncompliance. Six patients (1.25%) required wound debridement. Patients undergoing these procedures must be counseled carefully prior to surgery to inform of at-risk patient populations and the potential for noncompliance.
