Event info

“Glomerular diseases are rare but represent a significant percentage of the ESKD (end-stage kidney disease) population and are one of the few categories of kidney disease that are treatable,” according to KDIGO guidelines. The rarity of encounters poses an evidence-practice gap and major barrier to discoveries in diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases. An understanding of the barriers to using established therapies is needed to inform design of implementation strategies to narrow the gap.
Because of these complex, heterogeneous disorders, more education and research for clinicians and scientists is required to better understand the variability in clinical presentations, intricacies of the pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic treatment options.

Throughout this course, learners will be able to update and deepen their knowledge in Glomerular Diseases, improving their skills to analyze and resolve clinical cases and treatment options of these disorders, emphasizing the adequate interpretation of the renal biopsy. Learning will be enriched through peer discussion.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After the completion of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Recognize and explain general mechanisms leading to glomerular diseases
  • Contrast and compare the diverse pathomechanisms of glomerular injury and explain how they may correlate with different patterns of glomerular injury and various clinical syndromes
  • Discuss the evidence that supports the current approach to treatment in adult FSGS and MCD and the current limitations in our understanding on how to treat monogenic cases of FSGS in adults
  • Debate the use of immunosuppressants in IgA nephropathy
  • Interpret the pathophysiology adequately and in a timely manner
  • Demonstrate skills of analyzing and resolving clinical cases and treatment options of these heterogeneous disorders
  • Collaborate with other members of the health care team to assure comprehensive care of the patient with kidney disease
