PROGRAM OVERVIEW 

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in the United States and the third leading cause of cancer deaths. Of note, colorectal cancer rates are rising rapidly among young adults. Primary care providers play an important in colorectal cancer prevention and are often called upon to provide care to colorectal cancer patients during and after their treatment.  

The goal of this conference is to provide primary care providers from various backgrounds with important updates about colorectal cancer that can be rapidly incorporated into their practice and help bridge the rapidly widening gap between primary care and the latest knowledge about colorectal cancer risk factors, current screening methods and guidelines, state-of-the-art treatment, and issues related to survivorship. 

TARGET AUDIENCE

Primary care physicians, internists, family medicine practitioners, hospitalists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, residents, fellows, and medical students will benefit from this course.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

  • Define risk factors for colorectal cancer and current screening methods and guidelines.
  • Recognize the implications of genetic syndromes and mutations on colorectal cancer risk, screening and treatment recommendations, and survivorship.
  • Identify surgical options for localized colon and rectal cancer.
  • Describe the role of surgery in patients with metastatic disease.
  • Discuss the role of systemic and radiation therapy in curative and palliative settings.
  • Explain the impact of surgery, systemic therapy, and radiation therapy on quality of life and survivorship.

ACCREDITATION
