Neurology Literature Update 2021/2022 will feature summaries of outstanding reports from the neurological literature spanning 2021 through 2022. Presentations will be relatively brief, representing distillates of what’s new in neurological publications. The conference has been designed to meet the educational needs and interests of physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses and other primary healthcare providers who are involved in caring for adults and adolescents.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this Live Activity, participants should be able to:

  • Reviews new research and developments related to the assessment, management, & neuropathology of frontotemporal lobar degeneration
  • Enhance understanding of the current diagnostic criteria for Mild Cognitive Impairment and Dementia in Parkinson’s disease
  • Expand knowledge base regarding rate of cognitive decline associated with Parkinson’s disease progression.
  • Recognize common cognitive and psychiatric presentations of prodromal dementia with Lewy bodies
  • Adopt a standardized approach to diagnosing possible or probable mild cognitive impairment with Lewy bodies based on proposed operationalized criteria
  • Define rates of consumption that qualify as “heavy” alcohol use; Identify brain-related regions and associated cognitive functions affected by heavy alcohol consumption;
  • Recognize domains of cognitive functioning that may remain compromised >1 year following sustained abstinence in prior heavy alcohol users
  • Debate the clinical significance of statistical differences in trials for Alzheimer disease
  • Describe the effects of continuous and routine EEG on the outcome of patients with altered mental status
  • Describe the ways in which continuous EEG monitoring may impact patient care decisions
  • Discuss the data supporting the use of cenobamate for focal epilepsy
  • Select appropriate candidates for RNS therapy
  • Utilize RNS as a tool with both therapeutic and diagnostic purposes with chronic ambulatory intracranial EEG
  • Identify patients with RNS who may be candidates for curative or palliative resection
  • Recognize common & uncommon neurologic manifestations of COVID
  • Recognize neurologic sequelae of COVID
  • Recognize neurologic conditions related to COVID infection
  • Discuss the medication choices available
  • Discuss patient side effects
  • Discuss the use of traditional and alternative medicine.
  • Update treatment options of migraine headaches to include new FDA approved acute and preventive medications
  • Discuss the effects of hearing loss on falls and cognitive decline
  • Define and treat vestibular migraine.
  • Discuss how to use the MG Core Exam in clinical practice
  • Describe up to date management for neurologic rehabilitation care
  • Discuss recent significant advances in ALS research and patient care
  • Discuss with patients the evidence supporting the choice of starting levodopa in early Parkinson disease

ACCREDITATION

The Medical University of South Carolina designates this live activity for a maximum of 8.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
