OVERVIEW

In the midst of a busy pediatric practice it can be difficult to recognize the signs and symptoms of uncommon disorders that may need further evaluation by a pediatric neurosurgeon. This half-day CME course is designed as a comprehensive educational seminar to teach pediatricians and pediatric nurses/nurse practitioners how to identify the signs of pediatric brain tumors, seizures, and inborn abnormalities of the spine, face, and head; how best to triage; when to image; and when to send the child to an emergency room.

Improved imaging and advanced minimally invasive treatment options have the potential to greatly improve patient care and outcomes in children with neurosurgical conditions, making it critical that pediatricians recognize signs and symptoms of these disorders. Practitioners should attend this course to improve their ability to identify patients whose symptoms require additional testing and evaluation, and who would benefit from a timely referral to a neurosurgeon.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This CME course is intended for primary care pediatricians as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, interns, residents, and fellows with a pediatric specialty.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize common neurosurgical symptoms and disorders in children
  2. Order the appropriate imaging studies for specific clinical findings
  3. Identify those patients who should be referred to a neurosurgeon for further evaluation of those findings.
