OVERVIEW

Cayenne Wellness Center’s Annual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Seminar is a three-day seminar designed to address the multi-factorial aspects of sickle cell disease and sickle cell awareness and education. The 14th Annual Virtual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Summit is designed for health care professionals, providers, educators, social workers, students, individuals living with sickle cell disease and their families, and the community at large. The purpose of this educational activity is to strengthen the participant’s knowledge base about sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait through lecture, discussion, and sharing of current and future treatment regimens. In addition to presentations on the pathophysiology, complications, management, and treatment of sickle cell disease, the seminar will present the latest scientific and clinical information related to the disease.

This year’s theme for our 14th Annual Virtual Sickle Cell Disease Educational Summit is “Embracing Possibilities”. On Thursday – September 15th, we will hear from those who will update the community on Sickle Cell Disease in California from the Sickle Cell Data Collection Program (SCDC), the NHLBI Guidelines for the Management and Treatment of SCD with advocacy on obtaining evidenced-based management and treatment of Sickle Cell Disease in all CA hospitals, Racism and SCD, and national legislative Updates (during our Sickle Cell Action Workshop). This will be followed by a session on Sickle Cell Trait education and awareness, Gene Therapy and Informed Consent.  We will end Thursday with our Celebration of Life ceremony.

On Friday – September 16th, we will hear from our first Keynote Speaker selected for the Stephanie Mulkey Keynote Speaker Session: A Dream Not Deferred. Following the Keynote Speaker, we will have a session on the Psychosocial Aspects of Sickle Cell Disease followed by a session on modifying therapies and pipeline therapies.  We will end Friday with a session for young adults ages 21 – 35 years of age.

On Saturday – September 17th, we begin with our second Keynote Speaker Session – the Pat Corley Keynote Speaker Session: Embracing Possibilities.  You will then have an opportunity to select from either the Patient Track or the Physician Track for the remainder of the morning and afternoon.  During the Patient Track, we will have a panel session with patients from around the world on how they Live Well With Their Sickle Cell followed by Patients’ Rights and Navigating Relationships while living with Sickle Cell Disease.  During the Physician Track, the focus is on Sickle Cell 101, Emergency Department, Modifying Therapies, and Sickle Cell Trait.
