The 3rd Annual Mount Sinai Advanced INNOVATIONS in Heart Failure Symposium is a one-day intensive state-of-the-art review of heart failure and advanced cardiac care consisting of case reviews, didactic lectures, and expert panel discussions of emerging topics in heart failure, mechanical circulatory support and cardiac transplantation, showcasing the relevant clinical and research expertise at Mount Sinai Heart.

The 2018 Mount Sinai Advanced INNOVATIONS in Heart Failure Symposium has been designed to meet the educational needs of General and Sub-Specialized Cardiologists, Cardiothoracic Surgeons, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Transplant Professionals, Fellows in Training, VAD Coordinators and Ancillary Staff committed to caring for complex cardiac patients.

At the end of this CME activity participants should be able to:

  • Describe the worldwide burden of cardiovascular disease.
  • Understand the impact of co morbidities in heart failure with an emphasis on diabetes
  • Describe potential mechanisms for efficacy of diabetic medications such as metformin and SGLT2 inhibitors on patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction
  • Be familiar with the  clinical practice guidelines for Heart Failure with reduced and preserved Ejection Fraction of the ACC/AHA
  • Discuss the potential role of gene therapy for chronic systolic heart failure.
  • Understand mechanisms of efficacy for use of stem cell therapy in heart failure.
  • Describe current strategies to increase the rate of myocardial recovery following LVAD implantation.
  • Review new imaging modalities for the diagnosis of heart failure with an emphasis on diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis
  • Become familiar with new drug therapies for the treatment of cardiac amyloidosis
  • Review new devices for home monitoring in heart failure patients and their role in the team management of heart failure
  • Understand the potential benefit of applying these devices on decreasing heart failure hospitalizations and thus cost
  • Review ongoing drug and device trials for patients with heart failure preserved ejection fraction
  • Review combination oral therapy for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension
  • Determine the indicated uses for temporary support devices in cardiac resuscitation and decision-making.
  • Achieve a better understanding of hemodynamic changes that occur in cardiogenic shock and how these changes are impacted by currently available drugs and devices
  • Review cardiogenic shock trials and identify need for continued research to decrease the high mortality associated with this syndrome
  • Be able to identify the onset of systemic inflammatory release syndrome in cardiogenic shock with the development of multi-organ failure
  • Review new left ventricular support devices and understand the differences between axial, centrifugal and mixed pumps
  • Review outcomes of recent device trials
  • Review adverse events associated with chronic mechanical support
  • Understand how the current advances in chronic mechanical device therapy may impact the selection process for cardiac transplantation
  • Review outcomes of current mechanical devices versus cardiac transplant
  • Understand the current limitations to exercise performance in patients with heart failure and those supported by left ventricular assist devices
  • Review warm preservation techniques in cardiac transplantation and understand its potential role in increasing the donor supply by organ resuscitation and procurement after cardiac death.
  • Understand current modalities to diagnosis non-invasively cardiac allograft rejection using microarrays, cell free DNA and imaging
