Course Description

As the leaders in breast care for the region, we have found that many providers have questions regarding how to provide their patients with current information surrounding screening, new technology, and follow-up care. In 2020, we plan to open a comprehensive breast center which will consolidate the many aspects of patient care in one location. The first part of our program will follow a hypothetical patient into our center as she navigates mammography, surgical decisions, and adjuvant treatment options. In addition, we will focus on the many supportive options our patient may need from managing the toxicity of chemotherapy to the prevention of lymphedema and understanding reconstruction options and toxicity. Our hope is, by educating non-breast care providers on how we utilize a patient-focused, interdisciplinary approach we may influence care and improve outcomes for breast cancer patients in our region.

Financial toxicity is a well-recognized adverse effect of cancer treatment, which impacts both patient treatment decisions and quality of life. We know that the financial impact of cancer treatment influences surgical and adjuvant treatment options at the potential cost of optimal cancer care. Our keynote speaker will focus on the financial impact of breast cancer, and our follow-up speaker will focus on the financial resources available for breast cancer patients here at UVA. COVID has changed the face of medicine. While certain treatment pathways are recognized as standard of care treatments, this pandemic has made us re-evaluate what is safe and effective for our patients. During this pandemic, we have created new pathways to evaluate the benefits and risk of a surgical resection, systemic therapies, and radiation versus potential exposure. These new pathways are guided by experts in our field. Our late afternoon session will expand on the reasoning behind shifting standard of care treatments to optimize the risk/benefit profile for our patients with sessions on surgical, systemic, radiation, and imaging decisions. This webinar course will feature brief didactic sessions, discussions, and interactive case presentations.
