OVERVIEW:

This course presents an annual update of major advances in the treatment of cerebrovascular disease. The first session reviews two topics in point-counterpoint format: the role of mechanical thrombectomy in patients with large core infarction at presentation, and revascularization approaches for the posterior circulation. The second session reviews updated guidelines for subarachnoid hemorrhage management by various professional societies, cerebrovascular injury after chiropractic manipulation, a recap of the landmark stroke studies over the past year, and the utility of transcranial doppler for stroke diagnostics. The keynote speech, delivered by Dr. Patrick Lyden, addresses Cerebroprotection and the Future of Stroke Therapy. Each presentation addresses relevant background, existing knowledge gaps, and clinical trial information.

TARGET AUDIENCE:

This course is intended for neurosurgeons, neurologists, emergency department physicians, primary care providers, nurses and other allied healthcare professionals.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  3. Contrast Tenecteplase versus alteplase for intravenous thrombolysis.
  4. Implement protocols for blood pressure management in secondary stroke prevention.
  5. Discuss contemporary indications and strategies for cerebrovascular bypass.
  6. Prognosticate outcome for thrombectomy in patients with large core infarcts.
  7. Compare medical versus surgical/endovascular management of carotid artery stenosis.
  8. Understand the role of magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging in cerebrovascular disease.
  9. Review the latest guidelines for stroke management.
