OVERVIEW

Teriparatide, recombinant human parathyroid hormone (PTH), has been used as an adjunctive treatment to prevent and promote healing of fractures and nonunions in people with osteoporosis. The effectiveness of teriparatide in this setting is not well reported. As a result, the indications for administering teriparatide are not well established.

HSS Journal® is presenting a one-hour live-streaming webinar based on two articles on this topic published in the journal. The first, Bone Mineral Density Response from Teriparatide in Patients with Osteoporosis, was published in July 2017. This study, a retrospective chart review, examined the effects of 18 to 24 months of teriparatide therapy on bone mineral density in patients with osteoporosis. The findings and their implications will be presented by one of the authors, Dr. Richard Bockman from Hospital for Special Surgery.

The second article, Recent Advances Toward the Clinical Application of PTH (1-34) in Fracture Healing, was published in September 2009. This review article focused on teriparatide’s role in the healing of bone fracture in osteoporotic patients. One of the authors, Dr. Joseph Lane of HSS, will discuss his article, as well as two more recent articles published elsewhere that expand on what is known about the efficacy of teriparatide in osteoporotic fracture prevention and healing.
