This course will review the basics of how ventricular assist devices work, how to monitor patients and assess potential complications. This training is designed for those who assist with VAD patients including emergency department, EMS, primary care, home health, hospice and cardiac rehab center providers as well as physical therapists and occupational therapists.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

After attending this live internet activity, participants should be able to:

• Identify components, function and theory of device.
• Describe VAD alarms and emergency care.
• Describe how to monitor a VAD patient and normal VAD management.
• Identify and manage potential complications associated with VADs.
• Verbalize how to contact a VAD team and find additional resources available for VAD learning.

ACCREDITATION

This activity is in compliance with California Assembly Bill 1195, which requires that all CME activities comprising a patient care element include curriculum addressing the topic of cultural and linguistic competency.
