In this presentation, Dr. Foley describes the elements that ensure the safe, timely transfer of this critically ill population, emphasizing the importance of infrastructure, communication and pathways as the framework for efficiency in transfer. Reviewing surveys of time-to-death in patients with aortic emergencies, Dr. Foley notes a median survival time even among patients with ruptured AAAs sufficient to justify both transfer and imaging, and discusses national and international efforts to further improve interfacility transfer, and the incorporation of these protocols at Penn Medicine.
